Good Morning Exercise

I am a huge fan of working out first thing in the morning. I always feel so refreshed and seem to make healthier choices throughout the day if I do workout early. However, I am not a fan or waking up before the sun to drive myself to the gym and back before work. So I usually go to the gym after work, so that I can destress from the day. Alas, my current schedule is not allowing me to go to the gym after work at the moment   So I tried to find a compromise and think this will work.

Pinterest truly has everything. You know that saying, "there is an app for everything", well I believe there is now "a pin for everything".

I typed in "morning exercise at home" and voilĂ ! I got hundreds of pins showing me just that.

I chose to pair a HIIT workout with some easy yoga and, man it was a great! I felt wonderful afterwards and ready to start the day.

You do this exercise sequence 3x total which is about ~15min. And then do the Yoga stretching for your cool down, about ~5min.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

After trying another workout routine, do this one for 30 days and then move on to another routine.

IIFYM: Food is My Fuel

Remember that post I did called "Eat More to Weigh Less", well you can read it HERE if you would like too catch up.

In that post I stepped onto my soap box and told the world that it was wrong. That food was not the enemy but a friend, that should be enjoyed more often.

I truly believe that. We talk about the negative images out there for woman but we need to also address the negative images of food and dieting in general that are the kick start to those negative images for woman. Start at the root of the problem, as they say.

What we eat makes who we are. That saying: "you are what you eat", it's true!
We could not survive without it.

So, before I get up on my second soap box, I just want to make note that I am not a nutritionist, dietitian, or trainer of any sort. I am a woman on a mission to change her life in a healthy way and I want to share what I've discovered along my journey, with others, in a positive way.  What I express here are my thoughts, opinions, and experiences. Please speak to your doctor before making any major changes to your diet and or exercise routine--these people are here to help, use them!

Okay here goes:

Have you  heard of If It Fits Your Macros or Reverse Dieting or Flexible Dieting?
They really  are all the same thing.
It's a new 'trend' out there but one I hope stays and becomes a norm.
This is more than just a 'diet" but a way to change your eating habits forever. It has mine!

The idea behind IIFYM is to eat anything and everything that you want that fits within your nutrient needs. That's all.

Now, there are people out there who say eating anything you want is 'dangerous eating', but think about it. If you eat what you would like to fulfill your needed nutrient values you are less likely to do what they call 'binge' eating, slope dieting, "cheat" meals, or anything else you want to call it.
You're just eating. Normal.

Honestly, your body doesn't know a donut from a piece steak, it just knows the nutrients that comes from it and what it needs to do to break it down and use it. So once you know your needed macros if you want a doughnut you eat it and adjust the rest of your macros that day to fulfill what's left. The key is, and we've all heard it, moderation.

So, how do you know what your nutrient values or macros are?
Every body is different so the nutrient count changes per person.
That is what IIFYM focuses on: YOU. You are not going to be just one of the millions trying out the latest fab diet, and you are not going to have the same macros as the next person.
It's for you and your body alone.

Now, I've been talking about nutrients and macros but what are they?
Essentially they your body specific counts for protein, carbs, and fat.
These are the major components to how your body creates and stores energy, so we focus on them; we learn the formula that works best for our bodies.

How to determine your Macros:
There are several calculators out on the web. I favor  IFFM.com calculator and macrofit.com. I like these because they ask for your age, gender, daily activity level, body fat %, etc. These help personalize your macros to be just right, so be honest and answer as thoroughly as you can.

These websites also provide a lot of helpful information about how to  get started on the IIFYM way of life. So check them out :)

My experience:
I love food. Obviously, I  have a food blog and you're reading it, but really. I think about it all the time. Sounds weird but that's a food addict for you. I had to learn to control the addiction while maintaining my sanity. Going from 200lbs to 135lbs was one of the hardest most rewarding things I've ever done but I had yet to find something I could maintain for the rest of my life.
Sure, cutting my calories to 1200 daily got me somewhere ,but I was always hungry,
Sure, adding bountiful amounts of protein to my diet got me closer to my goals, but my pocket book was stretched thin.
Thankfully, I discovered LIVEFIT by Jamie Eason (you can read about that HERE) which lead me to  IIFYM.
And let me tell you, after sticking to it for 4 weeks, you just know what to do and you don't need to count those calories, or weigh that chicken because you learn and your life changes.
Now, a lot of people on IIFYM compete and need to calculate all of their nutrient levels to a "T" but if you are the average person, like myself, you can learn then relax, and eat!

Why I like it:
It's super flexible! If you want to lose fat you can adjust your nutrients levels, if you want to lose weight you can adjust your nutrient levels, if you want to bulk, or lean, or maintain you can, you guessed it, adjust your nutrient levels.
Remember the body uses what you give it to generate energy, make protein, and store fat. Knowing how those macros will effect your body is key, and help you reach your goals, in a way the fits you!

All of this is paired with exercise. Yes, you should exercise but it doesn't have to be crazy, just get up and move.

Why give it try?
Well, that's up to you really. I cant make you. It's your choice.

But  let me leave you with this: I am food addict who loves to eat and found a way to do just that and stay a healthy 140lbs, 18% body fat (25.5lbs of Fat mass, 114.5lbs of lean mass).
I feel powerful, confident, and full.

Healthy Spring Stir Fry

Yes, stir fry can be clean eating and healthy,

and best of all, be DELICIOUS!

I put this simple dish together in the morning for my lunch at work and was so pleased with the outcome. I could easily be doubled or tripled to feed more than one, and feel free to mix up the veggies and meat as desired.

Recipe adapted from Skinnytaste
Ingredients:
4-6oz chicken breast, cooked and cubed
1/2 cup brown rice, cooked
3tbs egg whites
1 large carrot, chopped
1/2 cup sugar snap peas
1-2 garlic cloves, minced
red onion, slivers
1-2 tbs low sodium sauce
1/4 tsp garlic powder (optional: I like garlic)
1/4 tsp pepper
1 tbs olive oil

Directions:

Mix 1tbs soy sauce,  pepper, and garlic powder in a bowl.
Toss cubed chicken in sauce and set aside.
Heat olive oil in a small skillet over medium heat.
Add onion and cook until partially translucent.
Then add minced garlic, chopped carrots, and snap peas and sir fry until veggies are tender.
Move cooked veggies to one side of the pan and add in the egg whites.
Stir them until they scramble and then mix in with the veggies.
Mix the veggie-egg mixture with  the cooked rice and sauced chicken.
Add another 1/2-1tbs soy sauce and toss it all together until well combined.

ENJOY!!!!

I did this Treadmill workout and man o man was my heart in my throat well before it was done.

This is no joke high-interval work out and will get your blood pumpin'

This is not a beginners workout.
I don't care if you've been running for ages,
if you are not used to interval training
--I am--
this will kick your bottom.

HOWEVER, do not be discouraged if you are a beginner.
Give it a go by cutting the time time in half...instead of 45 min try it for 22. It is repetitious.

Now get up and give it a go!

You'll feel ALIVE afterward.

Trust me.

Take the Challenge!

Muscle doesn't really burn fat, (I know, I know you heart is broken) but it does replace it and keep it away! So read on.

Muscle looks way better than fat so don't think: "oh no! I don't want to get buff; you wont--unless you pack down those protein bars/shakes and start heaving lifting.

So get motivated and build those guns!

What do I do?
One thing I've been doing are these challenges every morning for the last 3 weeks and man oh man is it showing some amazing results!!! (I'll get some pictures up soon)

It's supposed to be a ONE week challenge but I felt so good after the first, and then the second, that I had to start it a third! (I know crazy but you'll want to too!)

Try it out for size.

Do both challenges at the same time.

Together they are ~25-30 min work out

Drink lots and lots and lots of water through out the day and you'll see some results!

p.s. there is butt challenge too...

 Eat your veggies...

Healthy Cream Sauce Chicken

Well I was in search of  healthy wine cream sauce chicken recipe...wine+cream=healthy? yeah right.

SO I made my own!

Ingredients:
  • 4 boneless chicken breasts
  • 1 tbs olive oil
  • 1 tbs butter (I used parkay)
  • 2/3 cup reduced sodium chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup Plain Greek Yogurt
  • 2 tbs lemon juice
  • 1 tbs brown sugar
  • Sea salt (Rub)
  • Table salt and Pepper to taste (sauce)
Directions:

Swirl olive oil and butter in a large skillet on Medium-High heat. Let melt till the butter has little to no bubbles left (not brown!).

Meanwhile, Cut any fat off chicken breasts, then pat dry with a paper towel (helps them brown) and rub sea salt on breasts.

When ready, place chicken breasts (pretty side down first) in skillet and leave for 5 min. Then flip and leave for 4 min.
Check chicken is done with temp reader (165 deg) or slice the middle and look to make sure not pink.
Take out chicken, place on a plate, and  keep warm.

Add chicken broth and lemon juice to skillet (leave left behind chicken bits and juices) and and let boil to a little more 1/4 cup of liquid. (so the sauce is not thin in the end) stir every once in awhile.

Reduce heat to low and stir in 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt.
Slowly add brown sugar and salt and pepper taste.
Stir every once in awhile.

Cook any other things may want and then spoon sauce over chicken and serve!
(I chose red potatoes and broccoli) :)
ENJOY!!!!

The Rough Edges of Life 9/9/12

Recently I have been in a really weird stage in my weight loss/healthy living journey. I was on such a fast paced, highly motivated edge when I was in college and getting ready for my wedding! I reached my goal weight and learned a LOT of wonderful things and was even able to help some friends along the way!

However, now I am married (pretty awesome, I know) and living in an entirely different part of the country (the middle of it to be exact), with a full time job (yeah benefits), and trying to balance workouts and meal planning (please give me some slack, I'm really new at this).

So what I've done thus far is workout at home,(where I live it's not too safe to run on my own and the safe places requiring driving to and I'd rather save the money for other things...like INGREDIENTS for AWESOME recipes!), do every gym trial possible in my area (I chose the YMCA, yup. They have great classes and a money saving membership for lower income--ME!), and now attempt a 60 min workout almost everyday after work!

Now, I am trying to eat healthy while feeding another who doesn't need to watch his weight (He's just a healthy guy...no really, he's mindful of what he eats unlike many-a-men who eat whatever/whenever...it will catch up to them, just wait) and maintain the weight loss--
maybe lose a little more :) a healthy, MANAGEABLE way.

Next thing up, I think I am going to try out protein powder. I think I will start out with Nature's Bounty Protein and see how it work outs. Why? you might ask. Because I've been reading some pretty convincing articles about woman and the lack of protein in their diets (especially woman who want to loose body fat) because of the false conception that its bad calories and unnecessary. (If you're in the non-eating meat family, they have soy and plant protein...yeah....but for me, the Meatatarian, I will stick the whey--milk-based--stuff ).

I plan to vamp up my workouts by adding more weights (already started by doing the Summer Abs Challenge and the Summer Arms Challenge...MAN THEY ARE SHOWING SOME RESULTS as I start week 3!) and of course pumping up the cardio!

I'll let you know how it goes.

Got questions? Just ask!

Healthy Breakfast Oat Muffins No Flour!

-->

adapted from travisjessjones.blogspot.com

 Ingredients:

  •  2 ½  cup oats
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup Apple sauce
  • 2 tbs Truvia or stevia powder, or ¾ cup sugar (Your choice)
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt plain
  •  1 tbs ground flax seed
  • 1 tbs water
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 2 ripe bananas
Optional : strawberries: chocolate chips, blueberries, nuts…

Directions:
Preheat oven 400 degrees

Non-stick a muffin tin with whatever you want or use silicon muffin tin. (It was noted that paper muffin holders are not good for this because the batter sticks to them.)

If you have a food processor add everything into it and mix till smooth...
IF NOT lucky like that (sad face, me), you get to use the old fashioned blender.
First, blend oats down to a powder first (I used my single smoothie cup blender for this).

Then add yogurt, egg, flax seed, water, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and 1 cup of oats-- in that order-- to the big blender and blend till smooth.

Add another 1 cup oats, bananas, ¼ cup applesauce, stir into mix with a spoon or spatula then blend till smooth.

Add last ½ cup oats and ¼ cup apple sauce, stir into mix then blend till smooth.

If you want to add something extra like strawberries (like I did) or chocolate chips or nuts, pour some of the batter into a separate bowl and gently fold in that extra item.

Pour or scoop mixture into muffin tin a little more than half way and bake for 20-25 min or until toothpick comes out clean. (All ovens are different so watch closely).
ENJOY!!!

(This can be gluten free if you use certified gluten free oats)
