IIFYM: Food is My Fuel

Remember that post I did called "Eat More to Weigh Less", well you can read it HERE if you would like too catch up.

In that post I stepped onto my soap box and told the world that it was wrong. That food was not the enemy but a friend, that should be enjoyed more often.

I truly believe that. We talk about the negative images out there for woman but we need to also address the negative images of food and dieting in general that are the kick start to those negative images for woman. Start at the root of the problem, as they say.

What we eat makes who we are. That saying: "you are what you eat", it's true!
We could not survive without it.

So, before I get up on my second soap box, I just want to make note that I am not a nutritionist, dietitian, or trainer of any sort. I am a woman on a mission to change her life in a healthy way and I want to share what I've discovered along my journey, with others, in a positive way.  What I express here are my thoughts, opinions, and experiences. Please speak to your doctor before making any major changes to your diet and or exercise routine--these people are here to help, use them!

Okay here goes:

Have you  heard of If It Fits Your Macros or Reverse Dieting or Flexible Dieting?
They really  are all the same thing.
It's a new 'trend' out there but one I hope stays and becomes a norm.
This is more than just a 'diet" but a way to change your eating habits forever. It has mine!

The idea behind IIFYM is to eat anything and everything that you want that fits within your nutrient needs. That's all.

Now, there are people out there who say eating anything you want is 'dangerous eating', but think about it. If you eat what you would like to fulfill your needed nutrient values you are less likely to do what they call 'binge' eating, slope dieting, "cheat" meals, or anything else you want to call it.
You're just eating. Normal.

Honestly, your body doesn't know a donut from a piece steak, it just knows the nutrients that comes from it and what it needs to do to break it down and use it. So once you know your needed macros if you want a doughnut you eat it and adjust the rest of your macros that day to fulfill what's left. The key is, and we've all heard it, moderation.

So, how do you know what your nutrient values or macros are?
Every body is different so the nutrient count changes per person.
That is what IIFYM focuses on: YOU. You are not going to be just one of the millions trying out the latest fab diet, and you are not going to have the same macros as the next person.
It's for you and your body alone.

Now, I've been talking about nutrients and macros but what are they?
Essentially they your body specific counts for protein, carbs, and fat.
These are the major components to how your body creates and stores energy, so we focus on them; we learn the formula that works best for our bodies.

How to determine your Macros:
There are several calculators out on the web. I favor  IFFM.com calculator and macrofit.com. I like these because they ask for your age, gender, daily activity level, body fat %, etc. These help personalize your macros to be just right, so be honest and answer as thoroughly as you can.

These websites also provide a lot of helpful information about how to  get started on the IIFYM way of life. So check them out :)

My experience:
I love food. Obviously, I  have a food blog and you're reading it, but really. I think about it all the time. Sounds weird but that's a food addict for you. I had to learn to control the addiction while maintaining my sanity. Going from 200lbs to 135lbs was one of the hardest most rewarding things I've ever done but I had yet to find something I could maintain for the rest of my life.
Sure, cutting my calories to 1200 daily got me somewhere ,but I was always hungry,
Sure, adding bountiful amounts of protein to my diet got me closer to my goals, but my pocket book was stretched thin.
Thankfully, I discovered LIVEFIT by Jamie Eason (you can read about that HERE) which lead me to  IIFYM.
And let me tell you, after sticking to it for 4 weeks, you just know what to do and you don't need to count those calories, or weigh that chicken because you learn and your life changes.
Now, a lot of people on IIFYM compete and need to calculate all of their nutrient levels to a "T" but if you are the average person, like myself, you can learn then relax, and eat!

Why I like it:
It's super flexible! If you want to lose fat you can adjust your nutrients levels, if you want to lose weight you can adjust your nutrient levels, if you want to bulk, or lean, or maintain you can, you guessed it, adjust your nutrient levels.
Remember the body uses what you give it to generate energy, make protein, and store fat. Knowing how those macros will effect your body is key, and help you reach your goals, in a way the fits you!

All of this is paired with exercise. Yes, you should exercise but it doesn't have to be crazy, just get up and move.

Why give it try?
Well, that's up to you really. I cant make you. It's your choice.

But  let me leave you with this: I am food addict who loves to eat and found a way to do just that and stay a healthy 140lbs, 18% body fat (25.5lbs of Fat mass, 114.5lbs of lean mass).
I feel powerful, confident, and full.

LiveFit Phase 2 Results

Wow, What a phase.

I really didn't think there was much change besides me just upping my weights with more ease, but if you look at where I started things are looking good.

Everything is a little more 'pulled' in, which is always a plus.

My measurements are what tell the truth and honestly, nothing drastic except in my waist which I am very thankful for:
 2.5 inches
GONE.

Measurements:

Chest increased :  35in to 35.3in
Arms increase:   12in to 12.2in
Hips decrease:  36.5in to 36in
Waist decrease: 33.5in to 31in
Thighs increase:  22in to 23in
Calves increase: 14.7in to 15in
Forearm increase:  8.5 in to 8.8in
Shoulders increase  42.5in to 43in

Anything fantastic in this phase? Not really.
I just really focused on the diet because it switched up a bit.

No more "carbs" for dinner, instead you have 3rd full serving of carbs  with your small meal; mid-afternoonish.
This made me really think outside of the box when it came to making dinner.

For most of my life dinner meant: pasta, breads, rice, potatoes, etc. but it had to quickly become, salad, veggies, kale chips, and more salad paired with LOTS OF PROTEIN!

I also had to think about last meal as well. I have yet to have 5 egg whites for my last meal--sorry Jamie. But I have had fun making protein filled "dessert" like meals.

Such as Greek yogurt with some honey, fresh strawberries and a tbs or two of 70% dark chocolate chips.

Or my all time favorite: Mock-Wendy's Frosty Protein shake
This will rock your world.
3/4 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
1 packet truvia (or stevia) or sweetener of choice
1 heaping tbs of cocoa powder
(more if you want it more chocolatey)
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
8-10 ice cubes (this is key to making it a frosty)
Blend a heavy duty blender
(I did this in my cup blender and broke it. sad day)
Enjoy your seriously delicious healthy protein packed dessert shake.

Alright, so Phase 3 is next and things are going to be different.
I recently got a Lead in a Musical (ANNIE GET YOUR GUN) so rehearsals will be taking up my evenings for the next 10 weeks which puts a damper on my workout times. So I've decided to drag phase 3 out and only work out 3 times a week attempting to doubling up work outs on those days.
It is not going to be easy but I am determined to stick with it and finish this trainer.
I'll still maintain the diet laid out, which I LOVE, and will try my hardest to keep it for the remainder of my life.

I love being a healthy and strong woman.
Who's with me?

Here's to the long haul.

LiveFit Phase1 Wk 1 End

Alright!
I made it through the first week!

After a few days of eating high protein my stomach feels much better and as a whole, I actually I feel better. I feel more energized, and best of all, I NEVER feel hungry after meal!

Even though I have done strength training through the majority of my weight loss journey I am quite sore from these workouts. They are no joke and I am thankful.

I feel confident at the gym lifting the weights and I am proud of myself for pushing myself to lift even heavier weights.

The total weight lifted for the week was 28,020 lbs!
Feeling like a beast

As the week progressed I found myself eating about 1300-1350 cals a day and within that I was averaging anywhere between 120-130g of protein daily.

My diet mostly includes:
Protein shakes (body bi vi)
homemade protein bars,
turkey balls
lots of turkey breast,
hard boiled eggs (1 a day),
cottage cheese,
greek yogurt,
brown rice,
tortillas
and LOTS and LOTS of veggies.

I did go out to Olive Garden with my husband and got a chicken entree and ate all the chicken, half the pasta, and lots of salad on the side.
I share this with you, because even if you are following the planed out diet to a "T," she generally only gives you the amount of the food you should eat so you have the ability to get creative and eat any type of food you want.  So as long as you are getting 6oz of lean protein, 1 portion of a starch and unlimited veggies you can eat anywhere and anything. Enjoy it!

The following are my body measurements, I will post these again at the end of phase one and continue after each phase for comparison:

  • Weight: 139lbs
  • Body fat: 24%
  • Chest: 34 in
  • Arms 11.3 in
  • Hips 36.50 in
  • Waist 33.50 in
  • Calves: 15 in
  • Forearms: 8 in
  • Shoulders: 40.5 in
  • Neck: 12 in

I am feeling great right now, enjoying my rest days but ready for week two!

Breast Cancer Awareness (Never Lose Hope)

Breast Cancer Awareness

It's October and everything is turning pink. Literally; Out here in the city of fountains they have dyed the water pink to help raise awareness. It's a wonderful effort and I am thankful there is a full month dedicated to it, but I am a strong believer in it always being any type of cancer month.

My mother was a victim of  breast cancer, as well as thyroid, and uterine cancer but I am very very blessed to be able to say she was able to have ALL of it removed without a lick of chemo and is living healthy as a survivor.
Unfortunately, this is not the case for thousands of other victims and their families as there is still no cure for the cancer. So I'm writing this post to allow space to grieve,  a space to share memories, a space to unite those who share this burden, and a space to reach out and teach those who are unaware of cancers deadly trace.

I encourage ALL WOMAN, not matter what age to perform self checks and of course make those mammogram appointment no matter how uncomfortable.

Here are some links that may be helpful for tips, advise, self check guide and much more.
"Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures."
